Type:

New Build - Control System

Platform:

Siemens

Certification:

CE / UKCA

Summary

DelaControl designed, built, and tested a large multi-section high-current power distribution panel for a marine survey services organisation, providing switched and protected distribution of power across multiple high-current circuits serving hydraulic power units, compressors, and ancillary equipment aboard a vessel support installation.

Challenge

The customer required a substantial multi-section power distribution  panel capable of handling two independent 800A vessel supply incomers,  each feeding multiple high-current outgoing circuits to hydraulic power  units, compressors, and other onboard equipment, along with a further  400A sub-distribution section and two external supply sections at 125A  each.

The panel was to be housed within a shipping container  environment, imposing a strict height limit of 2,300mm. Cable management  was required both horizontally at the top and bottom of the enclosure  and vertically between sections, with bottom cable entry via a plinth.  Power monitoring instrumentation was required on the front of each main  supply section, and all MCBs and MPCBs were to be fitted with  auxiliaries for panel diagnostics.

Solution

DelaControl engineered and manufactured a five-section power  distribution panel built to IP54, designed to DelaControl's standard  practices and compliant with BS EN 60204, BS EN 61439-1, and BS EN  61439-2. The panel was sized to fit within the container height  constraint, with a plinth arrangement to facilitate bottom cable entry.  All low-voltage control gear and circuit protective devices were Siemens  throughout, and all metalwork was powder coat painted to RAL 7035.

The  two main 800A incomer sections each incorporated Siemens 800A switch  disconnectors, Sifam Tinsley current transformers, and Schneider PM5310  power monitoring meters mounted on the panel front. Outgoing circuits  across all sections were protected by a combination of Siemens SENTRON  moulded case circuit breakers and Siemens miniature circuit breakers  rated appropriately for each load, ranging from 16A to 400A. The  sub-distribution sections used Schneider comb busbars with individual  MCB-protected outgoing ways, while solid copper busbar and nVent Eriflex  components formed the internal power distribution backbone.

Full  electrical design was produced in EPlan, with drawings supplied in both  native and PDF formats. A Declaration of Conformity, signed inspection  and test certificate (including torque verification records), and  thermal calculations produced using Rittal Therm software were all  provided as part of the documentation package. Pre-delivery testing was  carried out at DelaControl's Bristol facility prior to delivery.
